How to Clean Cast Stone Garden Ornaments

Published

This page is for the first gentle clean of a cast stone piece. Vinegar and other acidic cleaners are not confirmed as suitable for every Ripleys Nest material or finish, so follow the care instructions on the exact product page and avoid them unless that page says they are suitable. For placement, weathering and seasonal checks, see ongoing care for concrete garden ornaments. Check the material and finish named on your product page before following this method.

The gentle cleaning method

  1. Check the material and finish. If the piece is painted, metallic or otherwise delicate, test a hidden area first and stop if the finish changes.
  2. Move loose leaves and soil away from the base.
  3. Use a soft, dry brush to lift loose dirt without rubbing grit into the surface.
  4. Wipe or brush gently with clean water. If water alone is not enough, use a little mild washing-up liquid in water.
  5. Rinse lightly with clean water. Do not use a pressure washer, wire brush, bleach or acidic patio cleaner.
  6. Let the piece dry naturally before returning it to a wall, pot or dense planting.

You do not need to remove every sign of outdoor weathering. Stop if the surface or finish begins to change.

Care instructions differ by piece and finish. The Balloon Dog and Sleeping Cat pages specify a soft damp-cloth wipe; the Capybara page also says to avoid pressure washing, frost exposure and prolonged standing water. Follow the instructions for your exact piece.
